ABC Family, now Freeform, really pushes the boundaries with its content. From discussing growing up as a foster child in The Fosters to producing the first mainstream show that shoots entirely in American Sign Language in Switched at Birth, this network truly produces an eclectic mix of programming to provide a voice for those who often don’t have one.
In this season of The Fosters, we get to see how Callie (Maia Mitchell) adjusts to her new life as she was just adopted, Jesus (Noah Centino) and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) handle their surprise when an old friend returns, and Mariana running for Junior Class President.
As a character, Mariana is a wonderful role model for teenagers as she’s an ambitious young women who knows how to dance, sing, and code. As a person, Cierra Ramirez was invited to the White House Science Fair last year and met President Obama, and will be coming out with her own solo music later this year. Since The Fosters just started a new season (the show airs on Mondays at 8pm on Freeform), we asked Cierra about what the show has done for kids in the foster care system, which strong women in her life inspire her performance, and about her style icons!

ON THE FOSTERS: This show brings the struggles of the foster care system to primetime TV. What do you think this show has done for kids in the foster care system?
One thing that really amazes me is the fact that our writers never seem to run out of content or topics. I always think they’ve touched on it all and then I’m surprised when I read another script! I think they’ve done a really good job of shining the light on a lot of issues that deal with the foster system and making people more aware of those issues.
What do you love about playing Mariana? What qualities make her a good role model for your audience?
I love that she embraces the idea that a girl can be both sexy and smart. Although she’s learning and making mistakes along the way, that’s a big part of growing up and I think she’s got a really good head on her shoulders. I also love her sass!
Mariana will run for Junior Class President this season. Who in your life has taught you to be a leader?
My mom! She taught kindergarten for over 15 years and I always respected her for that because I can only imagine the amount of patience that must take. I love her and she’s always taught me to be a leader rather than a follower, since I can remember.
What personality traits do you have in common?
Most definitely the sass and the love we have for our family, and we both love a good nail color.

You’re coming out with your own music this year. What kind of music can we expect?
I’m super excited for people to hear! It’s been a long time coming. Definitely look forward to a pop/r&b feel and I have some features that I’m also really excited about.
From following you on social media, I can tell your style is feminine and sexy. Who are your style icons?
I really admire Kendall Jenner’s street style, but I can only dream of having the legs to pull off most of her looks! She’s definitely up there along with Rihanna, of course!
What trends are you excited to wear this year, on or off the red carpet?
I’ve been obsessed with strobing lately; I feel like you can never go wrong with a good highlight! I love a fresh-faced dewy look!
